Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a journey of faith in which one person, the spiritual director, companions another, the directee, in their ever-growing awakening to the mystery called God.

A spiritual director is a privileged witness who supports the seeking of a graced awareness of, and fosters an ever-clearer response to the invitation and movement of Spirit in our lives.  A spiritual director’s role is to nurture the directee’s personal relationship with the Divine and to encourage recognition of and trust in the call of the "still, small voice within".

Spiritual direction is centered on a person’s experience of their personal relationship with Spirit and the transformation that occurs as a result of that relationship.  In this way, spiritual direction has a different focus from that of therapeutic or pastoral counseling.

In a typical spiritual direction session, a directee and a director will meet for an hour, once a month over a period of time.  The sessions can include silence, conversation, prayer, inquiry, and creative expression such as song, dance, movement, music or art.  For more information, contact Alison Zuber, spiritualdirector@zimratyah.org

In group spiritual direction, a small number of people come together on a regular basis to create spiritual community and support each other’s continued experience of God’s ongoing presence in their lives.  Groups will be forming at the beginning of 2016. If this seems right for you, contact Alison Zuber, spiritualdirector@zimratyah.org

Who seeks spiritual direction?

It may be someone who wishes to give expression to their experience of faith, who wants to grow in their relation to God, who wants to more fully develop the spiritual skill of discernment.  It may be someone who seeks companionship on their spiritual journey through times of hardship, transition, or joy, and to more clearly hear the call of Spirit in relation to their daily life.  Spiritual direction is available for children, adolescents and adults.

What is spiritual discernment?

Spiritual discernment is the  art and the practice of deep witnessing and examination (of facts, feelings, assumptions, bodily sensations, etc.) in order to come to greater clarity about the path that you are called to follow.  We do this in a state of openness to the many manifestations of the will of God, open to that which we don't expect.   it is about cultivating an indifference to a particular perspective and getting quiet enough to identify the question that really needs to be asked...and then letting the inner spiritual compass point us to our own true path.
