  zimrat yah

                               Zimrat Yah
                                                a barefoot shul

עָזִּי וְזִמְרָת יָה  וַיְהִי-לִי לִישׁוּעָה
The Divine Breath is my strength, my music, and my liberation.
-  Exodus 15:2 and Psalm 118:14

What if, when you walked into shul, you felt a Zing!
and "Wow! ... I can feel something happening here!
My heart is opening up!

What if praying and singing with a bunch of other hip Jews felt
a little bit like being in love,
a little bit like beauty,
a little bit like truth,
a little bit like imagination,
a little bit like spiritual audacity*?

What if being Jewish gave you the tools to be a better person?
What if you worked with new friends to make our community a better place?

* "To President John F. Kennedy, The White House, June 16 1963:
"I look forward to privilege of being present at meeting tomorrow...The hour calls for high moral grandeur and spiritual audacity."
- Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

What is Zimrat Yah, anyway?
Zimrat Yah is a community of seekers who want to experience the joy of being Jewish and who are willing to open their hearts in order to allow God in.

We gather together on Shabbat to sing, learn, pray and open our hearts. We gather for Holidays and other days to explore and experience the Divine in our lives.  We sing and make music together. We learn Torah and come out better people than when we came in.  We get together on other days for picnics, hikes and classes.

God is moving in our lives.
We work on actively listening to the movement of God in our lives.

What kind of shul?
A shul with a Chassidic soul,
with equal participation of women and men,
with melodies and drums of the Israeli desert, some from Reb Shlomo, Hillel Tigay at Ikar and others,
a twist of mystic that touches your soul
and a dash of relevance to your daily life.

In the words of our friends at Ikar, "We're not your bubbe's shul."

Who's Welcome?
  • Everyone who desires soulful, meaningful prayer in community, and in connection with the Divine.
  • Everyone who is "Jewishly curious".
  • Everyone who has a soul (that's everyone) who wants to refine and grow spiritually.
  • Everyone is welcome: young or old, gay or straight, Jewish or just curious, religious or not, fluent in Hebrew or don't know any, married or single, children of all ages.
